16th IALI General Assembly
15 July 2021
General Assembly Report
Presentation by ILO - Mr Joaquim Nunes
President & Secretary General Report
IALI was due to hold its triennial General Assembly (GA) and associated Congress in 2020. The Executive Committee (EC) had been working on the assumption that this would be held in June 2020 in Geneva. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has prevented us from holding these events. We delayed them in the hope that circumstances would enable us to hold a traditional, “in person”, event in either late 2020 or early 2021.
It has become increasingly clear that it would be impossible to plan to organise such an event with any confidence in the foreseeable future. The GA is an essential part of the running of IALI. The EC has therefore decided to organise the GA as a virtual event to be held on 15 July 2021.
16th IALI General Assembly was held over Zoom on 15 July 2021, an election for the new EC was conducted via electronic balloting. 70 representatives from 38 countries attended the GA. 14 candidates stood for the election and 9 were successfully elected to the new EC. The 9 candidates proceeded to elect the officer bearers.
During the GA, Mr Joaquim Nunes, Chief of LABADMIN/OSH Branch Team, ILO shared on the ILO updates pertaining to labour inspection issues and Ir. Ts. Dr. Majahar bin Abd Rahman, Director, International Policy and Research Development Division, Malaysia, shared Malaysia’s experience with IALI’s flagship programme International Benchmarking of OSH Regulations (IBOR) programme.
In addition to reports by IALI President, Secretary General, Treasurer and independent auditor, the GA also presented three IALI Position Papers, for endorsement:
GA-P1_Roles of Labour Inspection in Managing Pandemic such as COVID-19
GA-P2_Guidance on Competency Framework for Labour Inspectorates
GA-P3_Roles of Labour Inspectorates in respect of Migrant Workers.
